On lunar April 13, 1939, my father went to the town to buy kerosene. When he arrived outside the north gate of Linfen city, a tall Japanese kempei blocked his way and interrogated him. As the soldier found out that the age on my father’s Law-Abiding People Certificate was different from his actual age and thought that my father didn’t bow properly, he claimed that my father was a scout of the Eighth Route Army, so he kicked my father with leather shoes, causing him to die on the spot.
